Vehicle Description This 1987 Ford Mustang ASC McLaren convertible represents one of the most interesting periods for the Fox body pony car.
After all, Ford had their own factory drop-top, but this is a specialty-built machine that was made to compete with European luxury two-seaters.
And while they were expensive when new, it just means this low-mileage and affordable example is quite rare today.
The aim for these cars was quite simple.
They wanted to take a powerful American and give it a touch of European flair.
But doing that required a lot of unique pieces.
They started with a coupe, and the convertible masters at ASC cut off the roof, gave the windshield a steeper rake, and created a custom rear section that eliminated the rear seats and gave the whole car better proportions.
The ASC McLarens had a special body kit, front facia, rear spoiler, and taillights.
It was particularly nice to get a factory white one like this example, because the Italian lattice style wheels also came in a matching white.
You can see all of this so well because this is a well-preserved one-owner example that has averaged less than 1,200 miles annually.
It has the straight look and good shine you want in a classic, and it's just one professional buff away from getting some wows at the next car show.
Building this unique style was a particularly expensive undertaking.
That meant there were few people willing to pay the big money.
So while this was the first year that ASC McLaren utilized the Mustang, there were only 479 examples produced (and only about 1,800 ever made over the multi-year run.
) And since this example is believed to be in its original color combo, that likely makes it one of less than 65 ever! And how many of that handful do you think survived to look this good nearly 35 years later? The blue convertible top looks distinguished against the white paint, and it has a unique design specifically that wanted to look more like a Mercedes SL.
But of course, this car is even more appealing when you take it down.
The roof disappears behind the special hard tonneau to give the clean look of a roadster.
Plus, you still get the blue appeal thanks to the blue leather interior.
The dual bucket seats are absolutely comfortable, and ASC McLarens have their own custom stitching.
Since this quite was expensive when new, it also came with a long list of features.
It includes power windows, power locks, cruise control, tilt steering column, an AM/FM/cassette stereo, an armrest center console, and provisions for air conditioning (it will need servicing to blow cold again.
) This is a custom car, but all the majority of these interior features are shared across the Mustang line.
That makes for an appealing setup where many of the components you want to keep this a great driver are affordable and readily available.
Another part of this mainstream attraction is under the hood.
The 5.
0-liter fuel-injected V8 is a great Mustang GT piece.
It gives you a torque-filled motor that can move this drop-top with authority, and unlike an exotic European, your local parts store likely has everything you need in stock.
The way this original V8 is presented today shows the respect you get on a one-owner car, and the way it fires up and runs reaffirms this feeling of quality.
And while the mileage is low, we know you're going to want to add to the odometer.
After all, this has easy cruising features like power steering, power brakes, front discs, and a fur-speed automatic transmission with highway-friendly overdrive.
The sale comes complete with the owner's manual, maintenance records, and a reproduction window sticker.
This is the cool low-batch drop-top that is now just starting to be appreciated on the classic car scene.
So grab this specialty machine while it's still so affordable.
